Nordicomics workshop

5–8.12

Koomiksikeskus is hosting a four-day Nordicomics workshop for professional comics artists and other people interested in developing their skills in comic art. The main idea of the workshop is to work with other artists and to network. A similar workshop has been held in Helsinki, Stockholm, Copenhagen and St. Petersburg. More information about the Nordicomics program at www.nordicomics.info

The participants of this year’s workshop will draw a comic on the theme “Tallinn”. The comics are produced during the workshop and they should be ready when the workshop ends on the 8th of December. The results of the workshop will be presented on Friday at the Pop-up Koomiksikeskus party. Also, from monday to thursday every evening one comic artist will present their own work in a open doors event.

The size of the comics should be 21 x 21 cm. The page number is not limited just as long as the comic is ready when the workshop ends. Pages should be done in black and white. The plan is to collect the comics to an anthology, which we can present in the next workshop in Riga on January 2012.

The workshop is for all comics artists, professionals and amateurs. Accommodation is offered for all participants, but unfortunately travel costs will not be compensated. Please sign up for the workshop at mari.ahokoivu@sarjakuvaseura.fi. Inform us also in you mail if you are interested in presenting your work in the artist showcases that are held each evening in the workshop.

The workshop is supported by Kulturkontakt Nord.

emmiValveEmmi Valve (FIN b. 1984) is comic artist and illustrator from Porvoo. In Emmi Valves’ comics, she wants to tell something about life as it is, often with the end result of almost like a dream which was once real. Personal experience has become an encompassing theme for Valve. She feels it is important to put something of yourself in the work. Sometimes it is scary to tell about yourself honestly, and Valve often thinks she won’t publish the ready comic anywhere because of it feels too personal. But after some time has passed, lucky for us, she ends up changing her mind.
